Google Maps can now write captions for your photos using AI

Google Maps is introducing new AI-powered features to enhance user contributions. The most significant update allows Gemini AI to automatically generate captions for photos and videos users wish to share about a location. Users can then edit or discard these AI-generated captions, which are designed to provide a starting point for sharing content. This caption suggestion feature is currently available in English on iOS in the U.S. and will be expanded globally and to Android devices in the coming months.

Additionally, Google Maps is simplifying the process of finding and sharing media. By enabling media access for Google Maps in phone settings, users can view recent photos and videos directly in the "Contribute" tab for easy posting. The company is also improving how users track their contributions by displaying total points earned in the "Contribute" tab and highlighting "Local Guide" levels on profile pages. Achievement badges have been updated to better recognize contributors' expertise, and new gold-colored profiles will identify high-level contributors. These updates aim to support Google Maps' community of over 500 million contributors who help keep the platform's information current and useful for decision-making.
