Judge rejects Pentagon's attempt to 'cripple' Anthropic

U.S. District Judge Rita Lin sided with AI company Anthropic in a lawsuit against the Pentagon, temporarily blocking directives from President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth that ordered all government agencies to immediately stop using Anthropic's tools. Judge Lin stated the government's actions appeared to be "classic First Amendment retaliation" intended to "cripple Anthropic" and "chill public debate," noting public statements referred to the company as "woke" rather than citing security concerns. This ruling allows Anthropic's AI, like Claude, to continue being used by the government and its contractors until the lawsuit is resolved. The dispute arose after the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a "supply chain risk" following the company's refusal to accept new contract terms that would permit the government to use its tools for "any lawful use," which Anthropic feared included mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
