Arm, traditionally a chip design licensor, has unveiled its first independently produced CPU, the Arm AGI CPU, specifically designed for AI inference tasks. Meta will be the first customer, co-developing “multiple generations” of these datacenter CPUs alongside existing hardware from Nvidia and AMD. The AGI CPU, based on the Neoverse platform, boasts up to 136 cores per CPU and aims to deliver twice the performance per watt compared to traditional x86 CPUs, reducing memory bottlenecks. Other companies like Amazon AWS, Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have also expressed interest. This move positions Arm as a viable option for companies seeking alternatives to developing their own in-house processors, particularly as Meta has reportedly faced challenges in launching its own AI chips. Qualcomm, currently involved in a licensing dispute with Arm, was notably absent from the list of congratulatory partners.
