Elon Musk unveils $25B Terafab chip factory to power AI and space future

Elon Musk has unveiled Terafab, a $25 billion semiconductor manufacturing initiative designed to reshape the global AI chip supply and accelerate his vision for robotics and space computing. This joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI will integrate chip design, manufacturing, and packaging. Terafab aims to produce over one terawatt of AI compute annually, addressing the growing demand from Musk’s companies and avoiding supply constraints. The factory will produce chips for both Earth-based systems like Tesla’s self-driving platform and Optimus robots, and radiation-hardened chips for space applications, with up to 80% of output potentially allocated to space. A key component of this project is Musk’s plan to build AI data centers in orbit, leveraging solar energy and reduced cooling needs. While production could begin in 2027, the project faces significant capital and technical challenges, potentially altering the semiconductor landscape and reducing reliance on companies like TSMC and Samsung.
