Over a dozen chatbot harm & suicide cases in California consolidated into one big case

Thirteen California state cases alleging harm or suicide resulting from the use of chatbots, including one involving a murder-suicide, have been consolidated into a single litigation in San Francisco Superior Court, named the ChatGPT Product Liability Cases. These cases, brought against OpenAI and Sam Altman, originate from counties including San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Alameda, and feature notable suits like Raine v. OpenAI, the first teen suicide case in state court. The consolidation was ordered on February 20, 2026. Proceedings in the individual cases have been paused pending the appointment of a judge for the consolidated action, which caused the cancellation of an early April organizational hearing.
