OpenAI is planning a desktop ‘superapp’

OpenAI is developing a desktop “superapp” that will combine its ChatGPT application, the Codex AI coding app, and the AI-powered Atlas browser. This move, reported by The Wall Street Journal and outlined in a memo from CEO Fidji Simo, aims to address fragmentation within the company’s product line, which Simo believes has hindered progress and quality. OpenAI has been actively exploring new ventures, such as the Sora video app and the acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI hardware company, but is now refocusing on core strengths amid growing competition from companies like Anthropic and its Claude Code. Simo emphasized the importance of avoiding distractions and “doubling down” on successful projects like Codex. The mobile version of ChatGPT will remain unchanged.
