Mistral bets on ‘build-your-own AI’ as it takes on OpenAI, Anthropic in the enterprise

French AI startup Mistral is targeting the enterprise market by launching Mistral Forge, a platform designed to let companies build custom AI models trained on their specific internal data, addressing the common failure point where general models lack business context. This strategy positions Mistral against rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, focusing heavily on corporate clients, a move that is contributing to the company being on track to surpass $1 billion in annual recurring revenue this year. Unlike competitors who often rely on fine-tuning or Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), Forge enables training models from the ground up using Mistral’s open-weight models, offering greater control over data, behavior, and potentially better handling of specialized data. The platform also includes expert support through forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) to assist with data surfacing and evaluation, and early adopters include major entities like Ericsson, the European Space Agency, and ASML.
