Anthropic CEO stands firm as Pentagon deadline looms

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei publicly stated he cannot ethically grant the Pentagon unrestricted access to its AI systems, citing concerns over uses like mass surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons without human oversight. This stance comes less than 24 hours before a deadline set by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who threatened to label Anthropic a supply chain risk or invoke the Defense Production Act to force compliance. Amodei highlighted the contradiction in these threats, noting one labels the company a security risk while the other implies its AI is essential to national security. While Anthropic prefers to continue serving the Department with two requested safeguards in place, Amodei affirmed the company is prepared for a smooth transition to another provider if the Department chooses to sever ties.
