Amazon’s AGI lab leader is leaving

David Luan, the head of Amazon’s San Francisco AI lab, announced his departure from the company after less than two years. Luan stated on LinkedIn that he is leaving to dedicate 100% of his time to teaching AI systems brand new capabilities, noting that AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is very close. This departure comes as Amazon faces challenges in the AI race, with internal feedback reportedly describing its AI products as "Amazon Basics." Luan joined Amazon in 2024 with employees from his startup, Adept, which focused on AI agent technology that Amazon licensed. During his tenure, Luan worked on Amazon's Nova AI models, including the Nova Act AI agent, which was launched as a research preview and integrated into Alexa Plus.
