Google’s Cloud AI lead on the three frontiers of model capability

Michael Gerstenhaber, Product VP at Google Cloud overseeing the Vertex platform, discussed the current state and future of enterprise AI deployment. He introduced a framework viewing model capabilities across three concurrent frontiers: raw intelligence (prioritized when time isn't critical, like complex coding), response time (crucial for interactive tasks like customer support), and cost (essential for massive-scale applications like internet moderation). Gerstenhaber noted that while models are advancing, the widespread adoption of agentic systems is slowed by missing production infrastructure, such as established patterns for auditing and data authorization, though software engineering is progressing faster due to existing low-risk development lifecycles.
