Defense Secretary summons Anthropic’s Amodei over military use of Claude

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has summoned Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to the Pentagon to discuss the military applications of the AI model Claude. This meeting follows tensions after Anthropic reportedly refused the Department of Defense (DOD) permission to use its technology for mass surveillance of Americans and the development of fully autonomous weapons. Anthropic has a $200 million contract with the DOD, and Claude was allegedly used during a recent special operations raid. A source indicated Hegseth presented Amodei with an ultimatum: comply or face being labeled a "supply chain risk," a designation usually reserved for foreign adversaries. Such a designation would void Anthropic's contract and force other Pentagon partners to cease using Claude.
