Trump leans on Utah Republicans to scrap AI safety bill

The White House has sent a memo to Utah lawmakers expressing categorical opposition to HB 286, the Artificial Intelligence Transparency Act, calling it an "unfixable bill" that conflicts with the administration's AI agenda. Proposed by Republican Representative Doug Fiefia, the bill would require leading AI model developers to publish public safety and child safety plans and establish whistleblower protections. The administration objects because the bill resembles California's SB53, which critics argue creates unnecessary bureaucratic burdens hindering competition with China. This action escalates a conflict between the Trump administration, whose AI policy favors industry allies, and Republican legislators seeking tighter controls on the technology. The administration previously failed to pass a federal bill blocking state AI legislation and subsequently signed an executive order threatening to withhold federal funds from states with "onerous" AI laws, despite initial carve-outs for child safety.
