Anthropic to donate $20m to US political group backing AI regulation

Anthropic announced it will spend $20 million to support US political candidates who favor regulating the Artificial Intelligence industry. This donation is directed to Public First Action, a political group that opposes federal efforts to block state-level AI regulations. This stance puts Anthropic in opposition to OpenAI, which has advocated for less stringent AI regulation. Public First Action is backing candidates like Republican Marsha Blackburn, who has opposed congressional efforts to prevent states from passing AI laws. Anthropic stated that companies building AI have a responsibility to ensure the technology serves the public good. The AI industry is expected to play a significant financial role in the upcoming US midterm elections as leaders attempt to influence technology regulation. Public First Action was launched by former members of Congress to counter Leading the Future, a group backed by AI leaders like OpenAI's Greg Brockman and venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, which generally opposes strict AI regulations.
