New York is considering two bills to rein in the AI industry

The New York state legislature is reviewing two significant bills aimed at regulating the AI industry. The first, the NY FAIR News Act, mandates that news content substantially created by generative AI must carry a disclaimer and be approved by a human editor. This bill also requires organizations to disclose AI usage to employees and implement safeguards to protect confidential source information from AI access. The second bill, S9144, proposes a three-year moratorium on issuing permits for new data centers. This pause is justified by rising electric and gas rates, noting that requests for "large load" connections have tripled in one year, adding significant strain to the electrical grid, which is already burdened by over 130 existing data centers in the state.
