OpenClaw: all the news about the trending AI agent

The Verge
OpenClaw is a trending, open-source AI agent that runs locally and performs tasks via messaging apps, despite security concerns.

Summary

OpenClaw, previously known as Clawdbot and Moltbot, is a rapidly growing open-source AI agent that operates locally on a user's computer, allowing interaction through messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram to manage tasks such as setting reminders, writing emails, or buying tickets.

Despite its utility, the agent poses significant security risks; granting it access to a computer and accounts could be catastrophic due to potential configuration errors or security flaws, and some configurations have exposed private messages and credentials online.

This trend has led to the creation of Moltbook, a social network for these AI agents, built by Octane AI CEO Matt Schlicht, where over 30,000 agents are currently interacting via APIs. The project's creator, Peter Steinberger, also faced rebranding pressure from Anthropic (due to the name Claw'd, the Claude Code mascot) and subsequent issues with crypto scammers exploiting the name change.
